Can you stand one more? I just finished reading a new Junior Library Guild selection (mystery gr. 5-8) Theodosia and the Serpents of Chaos by R.L. LaFevers. Wonderful detail; fun accents to create for the over-the-top characters. Recommended in Booklinks (July07) to connect with Egypt studies.

Subject: [CALIBK12] HIT: 6th grade mystery

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to write and for the excellent
suggestions to my request for a great 6th grade read-aloud mystery! The
responses I received are posted below(pardon the formatting and lack of
underscoring.
Nadine Pinkerton, LMT

* The Egypt Game is good and it ties in so nicely with their social
studies curriculum.

* I vote for Things not Seen by Clement or Among the Hidden by Haddix.
They are both a little science fiction-y, but definitely have good
mysteries to solve.

* I'd need more information to really choose.
Alice Rose Sam by Lasky (historical fiction as well as mystery)
Running out of Time by Haddix (also a science fiction bent to it)
Mr. Chickee's Funny Money by Curtis (more modern and lighthearted than the
others)
Joan Lowery Nixon and Philip Pullman also come to mind if a more
horror/scary mystery is wanted.

* I don't know about "fantastic", but some students at my school have
become really hooked on the Sammy Keyes stories by Van Draanen (?).

* The Great Nixon Recession Caper [Larry was pulling my leg here. Ha!]

* Dollhouse Murders by Betty Ren Wright

* Time for Andrew by Mary Downing Hahn

* Ghost of the Tokaido Inn by Dorothy Hobbler
True confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi is an adventure (and
somewhat mystery) Both are excellent.

* I would recommend The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. It is funny,
complicated, and reads aloud really well.

* The View from the Cherry Tree by Willo Davis Roberts is still our
sixth graders favorite. Our sixth grade teachers enjoy reading it
aloud. The Westing Game is another classic.

* Down the Rabbit Hole by Peter Abrahams. I love to read mysteries and I
really enjoyed this one.

* Holes- it is mysterious and great literature and fun to read, plus a
little beyond their grade level, which if she is reading it for them,
it should be.

* How about Coraline, by Neil Gaiman? Coraline and her parents have
moved into a new flat. There is a mysterious door in the living room
that, when opened, reveals a brick wall. One night Coraline is wakened
by a strange noise and finds the door open and the wall gone. The other
side of the door is a duplicate of her flat, complete with duplicate
"parents" who desperately want a little girl of their own. Coraline
must decide which world she wants to live in and solve the mystery of
this duplicate world, which also includes some wacky neighbors. I found
it to be fun, scary, and engaging. I have recommended it to many 6th
graders and they have all loved it.

* My favorite is The Westing Game by Rankin. The class can help put
the clues together with the characters. Happy sleuthing!

* The Westing Game by Haskins?

* I still love Sherlock Holmes.........there are LOTS of good short
stories - and the Hound of the Baskervilles remains one of my favorites.

* When I taught elementary before becoming a librarian, my class (fifth
grade gifted) really enjoyed Running out of Time by Margaet Haddix.
Kind of early American, which better fits the fifth grade, I guess, but
the kids loved it, and it is a fun read aloud. My sixth grade
counterpart always did Ghost Canoe by Will Hobbs, but I haven't read
it. Enjoy!
