Now is the time to CONTACT YOUR SENATORS AND REPRESENTATIVE.  Now is our chance to have NCLB revised to give every public school student access to a highly qualified school librarian.

In September Congress will return to Washington DC and take up NCLB reauthorization.  Do not wait for September.  Contact your Senators and Representatives now, while they are home, while they are in their states and districts.  ASK YOUR SENATORS TO CO-SPONSOR S. 1699.  ASK YOUR REPRESENTATIVE TO CO-SPONSOR H.R. 2864.  These are the Senate number and the House number for the SKILLs Act.

THE NEXT STEP – HERE ARE SOME WAYS TO CONTACT YOUR SENATORS AND REPRESENTATIVES:

Make an appointment and go to their office while they are in your district.  If possible, bring other librarians, parents, teachers and other supporters with you.  Ask them to co-sponsor S. 1699 or H.R. 2864.  Follow up with a thank you letter.

Check their schedule of events in the district, attend and speak with them. Bring other supporters with you if possible.  Bring a letter you wrote or print information from the ALA Washington Office Action Alert to give to them.  Ask for co-sponsorship.  Send a thank you letter. 

Write a letter -- fax or email it to your Senators and Representative (U.S. Mail is too slow; it needs a security check).  Get librarians, parents, teachers and other supporters to write and send letter, too.

Phone your Senators and Representative at their office and ask them to co-sponsor the bill.  Get other supporters to do this, too.

Use the ALA Washington Office Action Alert prepared message at http://www.capwiz.com/ala/issues/alert/?alertid=9951101&PROCESS=Take+Action -- just enter your zip code, click GO and you are on your way.  And there is a field to add a message of your own, a good thing to do.
