[CALIBK12] "Library" is now "Learning Center" - What do youthink?

The January, 2008 issue of American Libraries will contain an "On My
Mind" column suggesting some things that get left out when we try to go
from "library' to "information center" or from "library science" to
"information science." Things like the humanities. Maybe we should
start having "imagination centers" and "imagination science and perhaps
"inspiration centers" and "inspiration science" in order to include all
that libraries contain.

Not to mention the fine program at Berkeley which renamed itself right
out of the preparing librarians profession......
I recently read something somewhere that was concerned with the loss of
the word 'library' because of all the intellectual freedom issues
connected to the word. A library protects the rights of its users to
choose their own reading materials and privacy of those materials. Can
a 'learning center' do that? Would a learning center user be legally
protected or not?
Food for thought.

Is renaming ourselves and our facilities the answer?
Of course!
You must have noticed the fabulous changes in the past as we renamed our
association, ourselves, our buildings and especially that place at UCLA
that does or doesn't teach people how to be ....well, information
somethings......depending on who you ask.
