Hello Brian and All,
Copyright law doesn't allow us to transfer a title from VHS to DVD. I
wish it did, as I have over 6,000 VHS tapes in my collection <groan>.
One has to obtain rights in order to do this. Copyright law does allow
a student to take a portion of a tape, digitize it and use it in a
student project within the four walls or virtual four walls of the
school.
Alas, we will have both VHS and DVD formats for some time to come.
Unless someone throws them self at my mercy and begs me for a title that
only comes in VHS, I have the practice this year of only purchasing
DVDs. Unfortunately some titles still only come in VHS - "Between the
Lions" produced by WGBH is only offered in VHS, with the exception of
season one. L

Subject: [CALIBK12] Burning DVDs from VHS tapes
Does anyone have any information on the copyright issues for converting
an older VHS collection into DVD format? Someone told me it was okay if
for educational purposes, but I had thought that it was not. Any
sources you have explaining this would be very helpful. Thanks!
