By the way, I began using Heather and Tommy's genre bookmarks this week and the results have been nothing short of amazing.
I have many students who don't have a history of literacy. Just the thought of going and picking out a book out of my 11,000 books is a daunting task.
But...they usually do know what kind of books they like. Being able to hand them a bookmark with twenty scary books on the back is empowering for them. Likewise with romance books. I started with these two. Students are walking up to me asking for the book marks. It also gives me the chance to reinforce how to find books in the library.
It is well worth going to their wiki. The download includes the book lists that you can modify based on the books in your library. It is one of the two best things I brought back from the CSLA Conference.

I do booktalks by genre at the high school and junior
high level using the theme "What's my genre?" I
figure that if students can connect to a particular
genre, they can better remember the term, while also
finding books they like to read.
I did a presentation with Tommy Kovac on this at CSLA
and the lesson as well genre bookmarks are posted on
my wiki(junior high and high school, but it can be
adapted)
