It is probably too late but if it isn't:
Fiction:
Ball Don't Lie - Matt de la Pena (best description of a gym ever!)
Rich Wallace's Playing WIthout the Ball, Wrestling Strubridge and
Shots on Goal
There is an NFL series for adults - newest book is The Cut.
Best Crutcher for me - Ironman, but any of his sports titles.
'
Non Fiction
The classic and standard as far as I am concerned - Friday Night
Lights (Bissenger)
Counting Coup
Little Girls in Pretty Boxes
Venus to the Hoop
Boys of Summer (Kahn)
David Halberstam's sports titles - Summer of '49 and October 1964, The
Teammates plus some
The Rivalry
The Blind Side and Money Ball by Michael Lewis

Most of the non-fiction I listed is narrative in nature.
