[CALIBK12] CYRM query

I need some input on the CYRM program for upper graders (chapter books).
I've been very successful promoting the program and the number of students
who want to participate has grown over the past three years. I now have over
70 students (about triple last year's number) in 5th & 6th grade who are
reading two books on their own and their classroom teacher is reading the
third out loud.

I bought one set of books per classroom, and I have the master list at my
circ station. I created a spreadsheet with columns for the students' name,
room #, library number, and a column for each of the titles. As the books
are returned, I check the class list and write in ink the return date under
the title column on that student's row. Then I locate the next student to
checkout the book to, pencil in today's date, and check the book out to
them, or put it in their teacher's box for them. I also write out a special
bookmark with their name and the date by which I need the book back for the
next student. (We don't stamp the books with a due date, normally they're
just due in two weeks when the class returns). It was working fine until one
student lost a book and other students "forgot" their books - those copies
were out of circulation for a month.

Now, because we are running short on time, I'm urging the kids to read the
books within one week (or check out from the public libraries, and a few
have) or many will miss the voting deadline. Since I'm on a fixed schedule,
it is difficult to have the students wait until their normal day to return
them without having them come in during another class' visit. This upset one
teacher, so now the principal wants me to find a different way of doing it,
or drop the program next year. She suggested giving the teachers all three
books and letting them circulate them among the students. Has anyone tried
doing it this way? Personally, I don't think my teachers want to be bothered
with keeping the list and reassigning the books, and would probably just
drop the program. It's also the one "special" thing I can do for the upper
grades as I have a very short work day (3.5 hours) for a school of over 600.
Is there a better or quicker way of handling this?

Thanks for any suggestions,
