There was a relevant article in this month's Reading Teacher from the International Reading Association comparing the effectiveness of SSR with SIR (Structured Independent Reading). The article is by Heidi Trudel entitled "Making Data Driven Decisions: Silent Reading."

Do any of you in middle schools or high school have SSR? Some schools set aside a 15 minute period separate from regular class periods for SSR and the students read for 10-12 minutes and then write for 3-5 minutes. If you do this, do you have evidence that test scores have risen? Any comments would be helpfulk as I would like to start SSR at my high school. Thanks
