Good idea about the 4 week rule. Since I didn't think about that, I do have several teachers that have monopolized some blocks of time, they are the reading resourse classes and those students really do need to spend time finding out that readiing is fun. So I have allowed it, and we negotiate when other classes need to come in. I think I will add your 4 week max rule after the 1st of the year.
BTW I am impressed with your podcast book reviews. You have a lovely voice, such good inflection, not a note of sing-song to be heard!

My experience has been like yours Megan, if anything my online calendar has enhanced collaboration-- more teachers are calling, they're excited to be able to plan from home and fairness of access is built in. I do have a few who struggle to edit, they call and I do it for them or they email me. But overall, it has increased my collaboration because they are happy and able to schedule time without a hassle. They see me using the wiki for numerous things and are excited about the opportunities to learn more tricks for their toolbox. It is a win-win.I do have a student who updates our paper calendar (we keep it as a back-up and for a quick visual) and makes sure that the staff members don't go beyond our 4 week advance calendar-- I allow staff to schedule 4 weeks into the future, because at our school if I left it open, only the super-organized would be on the schedule and it would be the same 4 people which isn't serving the whole population fairly. To date, no one has changed the calendar to remove someone to add themselves. The staff is ethical. It has been a great tool for us! I would like to thank the Summer Fun 2.0 group from CSLA for all the training and assistance. That training was the best training I've had in 20 years of teaching. It was so practical and helpful in this job we do. If you haven't done the 2.0 training, join Winter Fun and experience it for yourself. You won't be sorry.http://valencialibrary.pbwiki.comJoy MillamLibrary Media Goddess/TeacherValencia High SchoolPlacentia, CA714-996-4970 x3250jmillam at pylusd.orghttp://bookdiva1.blogspot.com/http://booktalksandmore.pbwiki.comhttp://www.vhstigers.org/library/mrs_millam.jsp?rn=3833"Libraries are not made; they grow." - Augustine Birrell-----Original Message-----From: calibk12-bounces at lists.sjsu.edu on behalf of Megan FullerSent: Sat 12/22/2007 4:51 AMTo: Janet Hasbrouck; calibk12 at listproc.sjsu.edu; eloomis at monterey.k12.ca.usSubject: Re: [CALIBK12] library sign in calendarOne other thought, wikis are a collaborative tool. The use of the wiki has actually stimulated collaboration at my site. The teachers still come in and talk with me, and I still attend the various department meetings, we still use e-mail to communicate with each other and I still reach out to new staff members to let them know how the library can serve them. We still get together after school for friendly functions at the local watering hole. The wiki has just made it easier for everyone to see what is going on.Megan Fuller Aptos Junior High http://www.aptosjr.pvusd.net/library/ Research is what I'm doing when I don't know what I'm doing. -- Wernher von BraunFrom: meg_ful at msn.comTo: jhasbrou at ausd.net; calibk12 at listproc.sjsu.edu; eloomis at monterey.k12.ca.usDate: Sat, 22 Dec 2007 04:33:23 -0800Subject: Re: [CALIBK12] library sign in calendarI started using the calendar feature on pbwiki for scheduling the library at the beginning of this year, and it has worked great! Even when I had the traditional calender on my desk anyone could change it, so that has not been a real problem for me with my staff. They are pretty ethical people and don't arbitrarily go in to create havoc on the wiki. The wiki is password protected, only the teachers have the password. I love being able to sign in at home, before I even leave for school, to see what my day will be like. The teachers were a little gun shy at first, but now they really like it. They tell me that the ability for them to see my calendar from their room has been very helpful. I get notified whenever someone makes a change. I have all my deadlines posted, so no one can say they didn't know, which has helped me. It really is as easy as making a peanut butter sandwich to edit, and as for my technophobes, I can easily edit it for them. I was shocked to find how many adults can't type. I also have a project planning page on the wiki, where teachers can collaborate & let me know when they are planning a research project. I have let the public library know about the page, so they can check to see when they will be innundated with requests for middle ages books. I am still in the prodding phase of that one. As with anything new there is a breaking in time. I run three wikis, my library http://bibliocean.pbwiki.com, Pajaro Valley Reading is Fundamental http://pvrif.pbwiki.com and a reading motivation wiki at www.readervation.pbwiki.com. (the password is booklove and I invite you to add your ideas) Of all the things I learned on School Library Learning 2.0, the wikis have been the most useful in my daily world. I am spreading the wiki way, thanks to Doug Achterman and the SLL 2.0 team. If you haven't yet signed on for the Winter Fun I encourage you to go for it.Megan Fuller Aptos Junior High http://www.aptosjr.pvusd.net/library/ Research is what I'm doing when I don't know what I'm doing. -- Wernher von BraunDate: Fri, 21 Dec 2007 14:20:10 -0800From: JHASBROU at ausd.netTo: calibk12 at listproc.sjsu.edu; eloomis at monterey.k12.ca.usSubject: Re: [CALIBK12] library sign in calendarHi Elena,We can schedule the library on our GroupWise calendar, but we keep a notebook on the library counter and teachers have to come in and sign up, meanwhile talking with me too. My library assistant and I can then post the signups on the GroupWise calendar so anyone can check availability in GroupWise. We are the ones with the proxy to change it. I think it meets a lot of needs that way, yet encourages the teachers to collaborate with me and not just show up.There is a calendar in pbwiki. I got the info from Megan Fuller and it works great, but everyone can change it if they can edit the wiki and you run into some of the other problems people have mentioned here on the list. Megan said, "The calendar is a plug-in feature on pbwiki, it's found under productivity (I think). On the toolbar you will see a green puzzle piece to get to the plug-in feature." I wouldn't have found this if she hadn't told me about it. I haven't explored the "puzzle pieces on the toolbar!Good luck with this. Let us all know what happens.Janet HasBrouck, LibrarianArcadia High School, Arcadia CA>>> "Elena Loomis" <eloomis at monterey.k12.ca.us> 12/20/2007 3:51 PM >>>Hi, I have had several requests from teachers to have an online sign in for scheduling classes in the library. I am wondering if anyone has figured out the best way to do this. I considered Google calendar but it seems hard to share and allow editing. I looked at Microsoft Outlook but can't figure out how to use periods instead of time. I tried pbwiki and that may work but I am new to the program. I made a table and it didn't fit on the page. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.Elena LoomisCarmel HighNo virus found in this outgoing message.Checked by AVG Free Edition.Version: 7.5.516 / Virus Database: 269.17.5/1191 - Release Date: 12/20/2007 2:14 PM
