At Thomas Jefferson Middle School Library in Madera, we purchased around
20...ones with a 5.5-8.0 RL approximately and ones for which we have AR
quizzes...Eragon, Eldest, etc. They operate just like an I-Pod.
Barnes and Noble has or had them and I bought one first just to try it out
and demo it to our SSC and some kids.
Since they arrived in April of last year, we have not really assessed them
yet. We checked them out just like any book..they come in a nice case (we
ordered from PermaBound) which we barcoded just like a book. My library tech kept
numbers on their use...and in August, I will check into the stats. Actually,
our impetus in ordering them (and our justification for the $$) was a
student with CP who cannot even manage regular earphones much less pages of a
book...they were perfect for him, but anyone could check them out...We did not
specify any way to use them by the student...just let them listen. The novelty
of looking like you had an I-Pod without having one (which is verboten at
school)...was played up. I will work with them more next year.
They are expensive...$35-$50_but they all in one---and can be used over and
over of course just like a book.
I would advise using something to wipe down the earpieces after each
checkout.
