[CALIBK12] Playaway books

Howdy everyone,
We started out with 5 popular titles, but they were so popular that
the 'hold' lines were quite long. So I added about 15 more. They seem
to be sturdy and I've had some that took rough handling prettty well.
I bought extra earbuds and earbud covers. I charge $2.00 if they lose
them or damage them [the earbuds or lanyard] in any way. I keep them
behind the circ desk which is easily seen by the kids. Every once in
a while, I'll get someone to 'booktalk' them on our morning t.v. show
and then there's a 'run' on them.

I encourage audiobooks for everyone - I love this format and let kids
check them out over long holidays so they have something to listen to
on car trips and the like. Their value for EL learners and RS
students is great - we know that listening to stories enhances
reading learning so this is one more tool we have to encourage
communication skills.
I also encourage kids who like to read along while they listen to do
so, but also tell them that they could do some routine task [a craft,
coloring, etc] while they listen. If often helps them to focus better
if their hands are busy also!!

I like these little things!

Thanks for the info, Megan. We use the "blockbuster" method for
circulating all our audio books. That is, the original case is empty
on the shelves, and a generic case with library information and title
of audio book is available behind the counter for check out. The
empty original case goes on this shelf when the kids check out a
title, and is put back on the circulating shelves when the audiobook
is returned. It was a initial cost to buy extra cd and cassette
cases, but it works really well. We can see at a glance which books
are out, too!
