Letter to the Editor
Thanks for the story on the Potter book event
Tami Jo Nix was at the TJ Library once again for our the final Harry Potter
Midnight Book Party, Friday, July 20. A fabulous writeup of the evening by
Nix appeared on Page 1 (above the fold, even) on Monday, July 23.
It was a great article (and photo) and a great experience for all of us that
night. A bit of sadness was present, since this is the last book of JKR.
Thanks again to Tami Jo, specifically, and to the editor, Chuck Doud, and
The Madera Tribune for printing this article and the photo in a prominent place.
And, I especially, appreciate the fact that Tami Jo included some of the
other books that some of the students enjoy in addition to HP. One student
indicated she read many genres, including the classics such as "Pride and
Prejudice," "The Good Earth" and is currently reading "Jane Eyre." Most, if not all,
of the students and parents who were present Friday night are readers,
period. They read a variety of books.
I must reiterate that this past year, the students at Thomas Jefferson
Middle School read twice the number of books as they did the previous year. We use
the documentation provided by the software of Renaissance Learning to verify
this number. Only if a student can pass an Accelerated Reader Quiz on the
book, do we call it a book read.
I thank my fabulous library tech II, Mrs. Chrisann Dominguez, and her
daughter, Jackie, for assisting me all evening. Their help was invaluable. Also,
thanks to the parents who brought children and many who stayed until the end.
Happy Reading to everyone!
Sharon Stockdale,
librarian for Thomas Jefferson and MLK Middle Schools
