[CALIBK12] Library Ed. Money

Kathy and all,

Everyone loved having a categorical line item exclusively for library materials as we had in California from 1998-2004. When it hit an allocation low of $ .71 per student, the block grant legislation looked--and still looks--like an opportunity. I just received the statewide accounting information on the School and Library Improvement Block Grant and will be looking for spending patterns and trends with the block grant that is now in its third year. The block grant allows for broader investments in the library, e.g. professional development, collection development, technology, shelving and furniture. I'm always eager to hear the strategies library people use to get the block grant funding directed toward the library program, especially as I work on presentations for the conference! Is there any chance of getting it back in a line item, or will it stay in SLIP? It just doesn't seem right to have to continually beg for money for books.

The original message was about one-time funding distributed in 2006-2007 for "instructional materials, library materials, and education technology". No rules on sharing equally. Many libraries received part of this funding and a few received all of it! http://www.cde.ca.gov/fg/aa/ca/imlmet.asp

The School and Library Improvement Block Grant money continues. http://www.cde.ca.gov/fg/aa/ca/ab825.asp

Hi everyone,

I must be out of the loop..it sounds like you are talking about ongoing funds. Could someone please elaborate on the funding info?

Thanks,
Katie

I do grieve for you Linda! But why then, do they call them "library ed." funds if they're used for textbooks . . . ? I would definitely get a commitment ON PAPER (or via email) from your principal that since ALL funding was used by textbooks this year, you will anticipate a double portion of funding next year to replace what your students were shorted on this year. (You may want to work it more tactfully . . . !) If that doesn't work, perhaps those of us who got shorted should notify our state reps and let them know that the loss of the budget line item for libraries HAS DEFINITELY IMPERILED LIBRARY FUNDING. And do make a note on your school library plan that "Funding for our goals/plans was not implemented this year (2007-08) due to. . . " - that needs to be made known.

On the other hand, I want to go on the record and say that my principal did set aside money for our library this year J! If we get it all, it will be almost $10 per student (which equals about ? a new book per student), although a good chunk of it is going to a new set of encyclopedias. After our reference purchase, we'll gain about 1/3 of a new book per student. However, much of the order is already going for replacement books - popular titles that were lost but not replaced due to lack of funding last year, so we're still not getting a lot of truly new materials. I'm pleased that we got all the titles for the CYRM program this year, and I have a very high level of participation, which has grown each year. We've also added some new magazine titles and dropped others that weren't circulating.

Hello all,

I know you will all grieve with me when I tell you that my district has just informed me that the ENTIRE one-time library ed. funds are going to textbooks - how sad indeed.
