In Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books all the girls and women sew,
and in one of them - sorry I can't remember which off-hand - Laura gets a
job as a seamstress.

WHAT A CREATIVE IDEA!
Hard to find sewing circle/seamstress books on a cursory search; how about
one of these to stitch by:
Daughter of Madrugada by Frances M. Wood winner of the FOCAL award
Anne of Green Gables by Montgomery
Ballet Shoes by Streatfeild
Little Women by Alcott
The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes
The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi (because not all girls wanted
to stay home and sew!)

FYI:
This weekend, I recycled an old T-Shirt by creating a bunch of little
Teddy-Bear T-Shirts and ironing on Image Generator designs (a popular
2.0 site.) I mention this because as I was hand stitching, I got to
thinking how this might be a good way to introduce students to sewing,
sewing circles, recycling, and holiday projects while listening to a
good story.
I'll bring 2.0 Teddy Bear T-Shirt patterns to CSLA Conference, should
anyone want to promote this idea for a school club or after school
activity. If you have any good read-aloud books that would go
especially well with sewing or the approaching holiday season, let me
know. The only book that comes to mind is one by Dolly Parton, "Coat of
Many Colors," where her mother sewed (with love) a multicolored jacket
for her little girl. Great book for any age, but too short.
Any "coming of age" books about working as a seamstress or needlepoint
to earn a living or because that was what young ladies of nobility did.
Thanks.
Best wishes.
