This is a response to all the responses I received from this mornings post about reading for pleasure and the boost in our circulation.
Yikes, I got many e-mails about our circulation. There is no way I can answer each one, so I am posting here again.
Guess truth be told, I did have to become an actress and I did have to buy the edgier books the kids wanted. I have "things" all over this library, powerpoints, brochures, pictures of teachers holding books claiming to be their favorites,(they really haven't read them). I know, I know I shouldn't do this, but it works like magic. I have book of the moment with a few blurbs about the book.
I am pretty "drama queen" when I gush about a book. It has actually gotten the teachers to read more of the young adult books also.
Some of you asked to see an order to see what types of books I order. I'm a bit hesitant to post it, but I will (see below). I'm sure I am going to get as many e-mails swatting me as I did cheering me on.
I do have a paragraph in our student notebook in the registration packet that we have books of all maturity levels. I have had 2 complaints in the past 4 years, but the parent, student, and I worked it out.
This gets them to read, so I go with it.
My biggest surprise of all is that the Twilight books and Uglies are equally as popular with the boys as the girls. The Maximum Ride books are as popular with the girls as with the boys. I loved that. I am always harping that there is no such thing as a girl's book.
I am just ready to start an order for this year. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know.
Attached is my order from last May so the middle schools that asked can see it. Everyone else can just delete it. Of course over the summer, I had to purchase multiple copies of Twilight, New Moon, Right Behind You and the Maximum Ride series.
