Oops. Should have stated from the beginning that I was just stating the
facts regarding an 8 hr. day for secondary teacher librarians. I didn't
make the chose and don't agree with it. While I was still in
elementary, there was an attempt to negotiate a change in the situation.
but that was sometime back and I don't know why it was defeated. So
many have elaborated on the many hats we wear, with earnestness and
passion. If we were to work a shorter day we would never be able to
accomplish the ordering, collaboration, book reviewing, and much more
that we all do, but it certainly would be nice to offically have the
same hours as teachers and leave if we choose to!!!

Yes, we do planning and prep, sometimes even evaluation when we
collaborate with classroom teachers! A Librarian is a teacher first and
foremost. In a public school they must have a valid teaching credential
along with either a Masters in Library Science or Library Media Teacher
credential. Their salary would be commensurate with their years of
experience and their number of units beyond the BA degree. Ideally you
would look for someone who had classroom teaching experience as well as
library experience. If a teacher had 10 years teaching and 3 years as
an LMT/Teacher Librarian, then they would have 13 years in the district
and would fall accordingly on the pay scale. I am paid approximately
$1.09/hour more than Classroom teachers to pay for the extra 10 days per
year that I work. We do 5 days before school starts and 5 days after
school is out. Each district is different so check out your salary
schedule and expect to pay somewhere in the mid-high range so their
won't be any surprises! Also make sure that the hours are stated up
front. I work the exact same hours as regular staff teachers. My
library tech works 8 hour days. Our Library is open 7:45-3:45 My hours
are 8:30 -3:00 and I am required, as are the teachers, to be on campus
15 mins. before and after school. Again, each district is different.

I certainly do planning and preparation on my own time, as I assume
most busy Teacher Librarians do. I quite often come in on the weekend
to prepare for the week. I work on book orders and budgets on my own
time, too. Don't most of us get paid on the teachers' salary schedule
according to our experience and education? Maybe the new title, TEACHER
Librarian, could clear this up for your district.

In LBUSD, M.S. and H.S. librarians are 8 hr. employees. The reasoning
is that we do not have to do planning, grades, preparation, etc. on
our
own time as do classroom teachers.

Does anyone have information on appropriate starting salaries for
school librarians? My school has had money budgeted to hire a
librarian
for some time and has not actually hired one but is looking to do so
this year. To start the process, my assistant principal needs an idea
of the appropriate salary to offer.

Thanks,
