Hello Melanie Sellar,

For the sake of ease, our high school's other disciplines support our use of MLA and their mantra is "whatever you used for your research in English, use for our research in this class."

Yes, we're all aware that it's not "correct" but we also believe that if the students get comfortable using one style, it will be easier to learn to adapt to others at the college level. As we require at least one research paper from each student each year, we're glad MLA is accepted and used by other departments as many of those teachers also require research. We feel fortunate to have this support.

I am not certain, but I do believe that CSE (Council of Science Educators) is the standard style manual for reports in the hard sciences.

When in doubt I consult a fabulous resource: Lynn Troika's Quick Access. I can't function without my copy. I encourage my students to buy them before they go off to college -- or to request the latest copy as a graduation gift. Many of our AP students buy it while still in h.s.and all tell me it was a life- and time saver!

Quick Access is used by students in composition courses at Cal State, Bakersfield. I would encourage all composition instructors at universities and colleges to make it a required purchase. It's well worth the money for any student. P.S. I am not a textbook salesperson, but I do know a good resource when I find one.

  "Happy trails to you,"
