Is there a school librarian or school library advocate on the
Partnership for LA Schools?
FYI: Here's a foundation that might want to hear about the value of
school library programs.

Best wishes.

Claremont McKenna College announced today that it has received a
$200-million gift from an alumnus, The Chronicle of Philanthropy
<http://philanthropy.com/news/updates/index.php?id=3136> reports.

>From The Chronicle: More Than $4.5-Billion Pledged at Clinton Meeting
<http://philanthropy.com/news/?id=3133&pth&utm_source=pt&utm_medium=news
letter&utm_content=leftbottom>

Donors pledged more than $4.75-billion during the opening day of the
Clinton Global Initiative, an annual event led by former President Bill
Clinton to fight global problems, The Chronicle of Philanthropy
<http://philanthropy.com/news/updates/index.php?id=3122> reports.
Approximately 1,300 political, corporate, and nonprofit leaders
participated in this year's gathering in New York, which focused on the
issues of education, climate change, global health, and poverty.

>From The Chronicle: Gap Grows in CEO Salaries
<http://philanthropy.com/news/?id=3130&pth&utm_source=pt&utm_medium=news
letter&utm_content=leftbottom>

Salaries paid to chief executives of nonprofit organizations with annual
budgets of $50-million or more are growing at a much faster rate than
pay for leaders of smaller groups, according to a GuideStar study, The
Chronicle of Philanthropy
<http://philanthropy.com/news/updates/index.php?id=3128> reports.

Yale's Endowment Posts 28% Return
<http://philanthropy.com/news/?id=3129&pth&utm_source=pt&utm_medium=news
letter&utm_content=leftbottom>

Yale University's endowment fund achieved a 28-percent gain for the
fiscal year that ended in June, and its size increased to $22.5-billion
- from $18-billion - during the previous fiscal year, second in size
only to Harvard University, which has $34.9-billion in its endowment,
reports The Wall Street Journal.
<http://online.wsj.com/article/SB119085512108640814.html>

Yale's results exceeded the 17.5-percent average investment return for
foundations and endowments over the same period and beat out all other
endowments with at least $1-billion in assets that have reported
year-end results so far, according to the Wilshire Trust Universe
Comparison Service, an investment advisory company in Santa Monica,
Calif.

Yale officials would not say which assets it held or which ones
performed the best. But industry observers said that the endowment,
under its longtime chief investment officer, David Swensen, likely
invests heavily in commodities and alternative investments, such as
private-equity and hedge funds.

Mr. Swensen, who was one of the first to create a strategy of diverse
investing beyond stocks and bonds, argued in his book Pioneering
Portfolio Management that depending solely on stocks and bonds would not
necessarily provide enough protection to a fund, and a growing number of
colleges and universities have followed his example, reports The New
York Times. <http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/27/business/27yale.html>

Foundations' Grants for MTV Web Site Anger Charities
<http://philanthropy.com/news/?id=3127&pth&utm_source=pt&utm_medium=news
letter&utm_content=leftbottom>

Leaders of several nonprofit social-networking Web sites who have
unsuccessfully sought support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation,
the Case Foundation, and similar grant makers, were angered when they
recently learned that those same foundations are throwing their
financial support behind MTV's new social-activism site targeted toward
young people, The New York Times
<http://select.nytimes.com/mem/tnt.html?_r=1&emc=tnt&tntget=2007/09/27/u
s/27activism.html&tntemail1=y&oref=slogin> reports.

"We have often been told by funders, including some of those announced
as underwriters of the [MTV social-networking site], that they don't
fund this kind of work, so it kind of bothered me to hear about this,"
said Jennifer Corriero, executive director and co-founder of
TakingITGlobal.org.

Ms. Corriero's organization is one of the social-networking sites MTV
studied before establishing Think MTV, its new site. Ms. Corriero says
she hoped the talks would develop into a joint effort.

Marie Groark, a spokeswoman for the Gates Foundation, said the Gates
money for Think MTV is part of a much broader, $960,000 arrangement
between the two organizations on how to help students become more
engaged.

Los Angeles Schools Program Gets $50-Million Gift
<http://philanthropy.com/news/?id=3131&pth&utm_source=pt&utm_medium=news
letter&utm_content=leftbottom>

Richard and Melanie Lundquist - California real-estate developers - said
yesterday that they plan to donate $50-million to the Partnership for
Los Angeles Schools, a nonprofit organization established by Los Angeles
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, reports the Los Angeles Times.
<http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-mayor27sep27,1,3238849.story>

The Lundquists told the newspaper that they plan to give $5-million a
year over 10 years to the group to oversee two high schools, and the
middle and elementary schools that feed into them, with the donations
starting as soon as July 2008.

The Lundquists said they have no business interests with the city or
school district, and were motivated to donate by a desire to improve a
school system they each attended 40 years ago.

N.Y.'s Museum of Modern Art Hires Walker Director
<http://philanthropy.com/news/?id=3132&pth&utm_source=pt&utm_medium=news
letter&utm_content=leftbottom>

The Museum of Modern Art, in New York, has hired Kathy Halbreich, the
director of the Walker Art Center, in Minneapolis, as an associate
director, to work alongside Glenn D. Lowry, the New York museum's
director for the past 12 years, reports The New York Times.
&en=63a09ac5d1a36796&ei=5070&emc=eta1>

Ms. Halbreich, who announced in March that she was retiring from the
Walker, will work with the Museum of Modern Art's curators on programs
that crisscross different disciplines, and she will keep the museum
informed of the latest developments in contemporary art. She is expected
to start work in February.

Ms. Halbreich's appointment has put to rest rumors that she was being
courted to succeed Mr. Lowry.

Instead, MoMA chose to create an influential position for Ms. Halbreich
where she will organize exhibitions, plan performances, and acquire art
without assuming directorial responsibilities like fund raising or
overseeing capital expansions.
