[CALIBK12] Accelerated Reader question- HOW?

What I have discovered is that the discussion is moot. I purchase the books pre-processed with the colored stripes indicating the lexile level and the RC reading level and points white label... all above the call number label. Since a good 95% of the fiction are so labeled... the books look uniform.
What I have discovered is that... it is like going to a new clothing store.... unless someone points out to you that your size has a orange ring around the clothes hanger, you don't see the colored rings... and you don't memorize the other sizes/colors after you do figure it out. It is the same thing with the students and the lexile level colored stipes and rc labels. You have to teach them to see them and interpret them. When the reading classes come into the library, each child, after lexile testing, is shown the two or three colors that they are more likely to find something to read at their comfort level. Most everyone in the class is within the same broad range... so no one feels awkward. We concentrate on the genres, and finding something they would like to read.
As part of my orientation, I ask them how old they were when they started to talk.... it always varies...and then I say I noticed that they can all talk, now! Everyone learns to walk, ride a bike and read at a different pace. I ask, " how many of you can play the guitar or other musical instrument?" I tell them that reading is like learning to play a musical instrument... at first you have to concentrate on your fingers for every note... and then after awhile everything is automatic. Reading is the same way... you are making pathways in your brain... all it takes is practice... so read something you enjoy reading. If yoiu check out a book you don't like, bring it back and get another one. I don't like horror stories and won't read them.
Anyway, that is my experience.

Deb, You stated: Any labeling of library books, besides genre, violates someones rights and freedoms. How exactly? Does putting a label on something prohibit them from selecting it? While putting on a leveling label may embarrass some students, the label itself doesnt restrict anyone from reading the material unless someone else (i.e. a teacher or librarian) restricts students to a specific level or limited selection, and that could happen with or without a label. But thats a different issue. Please, I would like to read your reasoning. Joanne Ladewig (A.K.A. Hello Mary and CAlib; Im trying to think how I would feel if I was an author of one of the non-starred books. I would pop into the library and ask why kids were directed away from the books I had worked so hard to write. Any labeling of library books, besides genre, violates someones rights and freedoms.Just a thought,Deb Stanley, LMTCentral Middle SchoolRiverside Unified SD951-788-7282

We put stars on the spines of all the books that have quizzes, but put the level information inside the back cover. Kids need to be able to locate books with quizzes easily, but the levels are nobody else's business.
