The following message is sent on behalf of Pat Lindsay and Julie Zisk,
the 2007 CSLA Conference Committee Author Chairs:
Authors Hazuki Kataoka and David Battino, say that when presenting
Kamishibai (paper theater), "reading becomes storytelling." Kamishibai
is based on traditional Japanese picture-card dramas, and is a popular
street performance in Tokyo. Featuring multicultural folktales, the
format of artwork on one side of sturdy 13-inch-wide cards and printed
text on reverse side visually demonstrates that reading does become
storytelling. Librarians can tell the stories and, at the same time,
interact with the children. During the session, Hazuki and David relate
the history of Kamishibai from the street performance beginnings to
modern Japanese education. Website: www.leafmoonarts.com

Sonia Levitin writes books for children, young adults and adults. Born
in Germany in the 1930s, her family's escape from the Nazis provided the
background for her acclaimed JOURNEY TO AMERICA trilogy and the impetus
for over 40 books dealing with social concerns. Sonia's books have
received special recognition, including a National Jewish Book Award, a
PEN Award, a Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, a Western Writers of America
Award and an Edgar for Best Mystery. Recent titles include THE GOODNESS
GENE, a science fiction thriller, JUNK MAN'S DAUGHTER, a rag-to-riches
American tale, and STRANGE RELATIONS, life with Chasidic Jews.

book, was inspired by a trip to China. Several other children's books

Poet, myth teller and mask maker, Kate Hovey dramatically gives life to
the gods, goddesses and heroes of Ancient Greece. Incorporating the
craft of copper masks into her multi-media presentation, Kate explores
Greek mythology through classical theater and statuary, as well as other
examples of lyrical art work. VOICES OF THE TROJAN WAR revisits THE
ILIAD OF HOMER, retelling the tragic story of Troy through the voices of
the gods and heroes who fought there. VOICES OF THE TROJAN WAR was
named a 2005 Notable Book For Children in the English Language by the
National Council of Teachers of English. ANCIENT VOICES, a collection of
poetry, was inspired by Kate's frequent visits to the J. Paul Getty
Museum in Malibu and its Greco-Roman antiquities collection. Website:
