Carol,
You bring up an important issue: School computer policy.
Each year for the past too many years I've called for pre-AUP
instruction. Instruction in Internet safety, ethics, copyright, and
more is an appropriate role for school teacher-librarians, LMTs. From a
library professional's perspective, school Internet policy (required to
protect the district) is an excellent opportunity to become visible to
the full school community right at the start of each school year. At
least one CSLA member is creating a pre-AUP instructional program
especially for her school. What is needed is a template or framework
that can be easily modified for each district or school, with a core set
of RESOURCES and ACTIVITIES to engage and educate students, parents, and
teachers.
FYI: Check out the San Mateo County Grand Jury findings and
recommendations related to this issue. It is not surprising that there
is NO REFERENCE to school libraries or library instruction, but neither
is there another specific teacher or program that is pointed to as the
person or program to instruct students in Internet Safety. See

Last year, CTAP Region 4 made posters available that support their
very-well done cybersafety website. The website and poster will be
updated again this year. See http://www.ctap4.org/cybersafety/
Once again, this is an opportunity for LMTs. Be proactive!
Best wishes.

Our school requires that students sign an acceptable use policy
before they are given a login. This policy also requires a parent's
signature.
Incoming 9th graders are given a Library Orientation, during which we
cover many of these topics and teach them how to access the public
library databases and our own reference ebooks. The Library Orientation
sheet is given to each student. They seem to remember the directions
throughout their high school career. I keep extra copies on hand of the
orientation and other lessons I give, such as MLA format.
I don't have evidence that our students read the signs I have posted
about how to print and put money into their printer account which is
computer-managed. This is the most frequent instruction I have to
repeat. I just think people prefer to ask a human a question, rather
than read instructions.

For high school libraries:
Do you have a sign/poster in the area of your computers
detailing the appropriate and inappropriate uses of the computers? I'm
trying to create a more positive message while still getting across that
certain activities aren't allowed.
I would love to hear what you do in regards to wording, and do
you have one big sign or a small sign on each computer, or in each row
(if you have rows)?
Also, do you have instructions for database use posted?
(We have remodeled the library and the catch as catch can signs
I used to post just aren't good enough anymore!)
Thanks for any hints you might have.
