When I worked for a County Office of Ed., we had coop agreements with
bookstores in the county, and they had lists of all the school library's
needs and wants so that when parents came in they could choose.  A
couple of times a year they would publicize the library wish list week
and we got a number of donations to different schools that way.

On Back to School Night we have a small elegant display (tablecloths,
potted flowers) of books that we'd like parents to buy for the library
in our gift book program, with a copy of our huge current Wish List. We
have flyers with explanation of the gift book program, samples of
previous bought books, etc. Not that many parents stop in, but it makes
for a nice connection on Open House at the end of the school year. 

Then on Open House we have a huge sign that says Thank You Parents with
as many gift books as we can fit on the tables, with tablecloths and
flowers and a small dish of candy. The comments, since we've been doing
it, have been wonderful.  Helps parents feel acknowledged and
appreciated.
