Posted on behalf of Pat Lindsay and Julie Zisk, author chairs on the
conference committee:

Jean Ferris will discuss UNDERGROUND, one of her newest books. The
setting is Mammoth Cave in the 1830s and chronicles fictionalized events
in the life of a real person-the slave Stephen Bishop, a famous guide at
the cave. The Underground Railroad also figures in the plot. Jean's BAD
was a California Young Reader Medal winner in 2002; OF SOUND MIND
received an ALA Best Books for Young Adults (2002). She loves writing
for young people because the turbulent memories of her own adolescence
remain so clear to her, and emotions haven't changed from then to now.

Presenting slides, artifacts, and scenes of San Francisco's history
(1906-1943), Milly Lee relates poignant family stories about the
Chinese-American experiences and immigration to America. All of the main
characters in her books are based on people she knew, and the stories
are based on real incidents in their lives. NIM AND THE WAR EFFORT tells
the story of Chinese-American life during World War II. EARTHQUAKE is
based on her mother's experience during the 1906 San Francisco
earthquake and fire. Recently Milly received the "Silver Medal for
Juvenile Literature" from the Commonwealth Club 2007 Book Awards. Her
award-winning book is LANDED. Milly based LANDED on her father-in-law's
real life experience on Angel Island, when, as a young boy, he came to
America.

Alexis O'Neill is the author of LOUD EMILY, THE RECESS QUEEN, and
ESTELLA'S SWAP. This multicultural book is about generosity and a
unique California experience; ESTELLA EN EL MERCADO DE PULGAS is the
Spanish version of ESTELLA'S SWAP. Alexis uses songs, props and pictures
to show where her ideas originate. She also takes you on a whirlwind
behind-the-scenes tour of how her children's books were created. She
will share advice on how to shape your own stories and find major
publishers. Website: www.alexisoneill.com <http://www.alexisoneill.com/>

Rene Colato Lainez stories and writings reflect the diversity and
experiences of minority children. His stories are about Latino children
living in the United States and their conflicts adapting to a new
country, without losing their roots and culture. As a bilingual teacher,
he loves to create books with his students and their parents. Rene's
books have earned special recognition: I AM RENE THE BOY (SOY RENE, EL
NINO) received the "International Latino Book Award for Best Bilingual
Picture Book of 2006", a Special Recognition in the 2006 "Paterson Prize
for Books for Young People" and was a Junior Guild selection. PLAYING
