We give a second set of textbooks when we have them. At registration, when they ask for the 2nd set, I tell them to contac me after the 2nd week of school and if I have extras, I am happy to lend them to them. I also tell them they can contact me and I will get them the info if they would like to order them. I always have a textbook replacement poster hanging, so they can see the prices. I tell them that textbook funds are limited. I set aside at least 20 for new students.
Works for us.

Subject: [CALIBK12] 2nd Set of Textbooks

This year we have had far more requests for a second set of textbooks at both our elementary and intermediate schools. We have had requests due to divorced parents, doctors notes, "just because it would be more convenient" notes,... I am currently developing a formal policy regarding second sets so that we can be consistent when requests arise.

Do any of you have a formal (or informal) policy regarding second sets of textbooks? Our district has been working to bring the textbook weight in backpacks down to a more reasonable level as in the past this was the usual reason for a second set request. Our intermediate students currently only carry a math book and their consumable workbooks and our elementary students under normal circumstances would bring home only 1-2 textbooks a night.

Thank you for your assistance, Amber
