[CALIBK12] a question of formatting -deselecting AutoCorrect quotes

In Windows Version XP: Click on "Tools" and pull down, select "AutoCorrect
Options." In the "AutoCorrect in Email" dialog box, select the tab "Auto
Format as you Type" then deselect (uncheck): "Replace as you type "Straight
Quotes" with "Smart Quotes"."

Just did this. Hopefully my messages will be more readable for Heather, et
al. I was going to write "intelligible" but that's probably more than even
Bill Gates could help me with <wink>!

Heather, if my message still comes in a garbled format, please let me know.

Subject: [CALIBK12] a question of formatting (not red indians)

Heather, Marie, et al:

1) When you change the subject it's best to change the subject line to avoid
confusion.

2) Take a look at the changed text. It's usually obvious that it is an
apostrophe or quotation marks or dashes that are being replaced with
gibberish. The reason is that the person sending the garbled message has
"smart quotes" enabled in their email preferences. Sometimes this gets read
just fine by those with similar systems, but when messages pass over from PC
to MAC, or from Yahoo to AOL, they often get "translated" badly. I'm using
quotes here to see if you get this garbled. What you sent out and asked ME
about wasn't sent by me. The above was. Are the marks intact?

3) At some point in the interchange of email it becomes impossible to know
who is sending and responding. Taking a few seconds to actually think about
how your message will appear will be helpful to your reader -- as will
noticing whether you are "replying" or "replying to all." It also helps to
use your computer's spell check capabilities. I just did and fixed three
errors (yes, even ME!).
