I am the secretary of SLIP for my school and I still have to beg. I advocate first, then resort to begging.
At our district library meetings, it has become a hot topic. The part-time people are really resenting having to beg and will just accept what they get. Sad, but true.

To message 4....get on the School Site Council...you'd be surprised how little competition there is for the position and how easy it is to get money...I am also sorry the library grant was folded into SLIB, but I have learned to live with it........

Yes, there are many old 16 mm educational films like that. I used to check out many of them in the 80's when we still had projectors. Some of them have made it to video tape, such as Our Mr. Sun, but sadly most of those films are probably headed for obscurity. Marc.

Speaking of old films that we watched in school as children. There was a film about a man who hit a little girl who became paralyzed. He was in such a rush he didn't see her in the crosswalk. In the end he goes to see the little girl in the hospital to ask for forgiveness, and the little girl smiled and said she had already forgiven him. Black and white short film. The ultimate tale of forgiveness. Does anybody remember this film? What was the name? It explored the human side of tragedy and the healing power of forgiveness. I can't remember the name. Can anybody help?

Our 6th grade teacher was so wowed by all the suggestions for the Mythology unit she asked if there were any great ideas for teaching a unit on Ancient Egypt. Anyone?

You also need to understand that some of the programs being offered in
Anaheim were planned 18 months ago. So, you may be applying to give a
program in another city.

Is there any chance of getting it back in a line item, or will it stay in SLIP? It just doesn't seem right to have to continually beg for money for books.

The original message was about one-time funding distributed in 2006-2007 for "instructional materials, library materials, and education technology". No rules on sharing equally. Many libraries received part of this funding and a few received all of it! http://www.cde.ca.gov/fg/aa/ca/imlmet.asp

The School and Library Improvement Block Grant money continues. http://www.cde.ca.gov/fg/aa/ca/ab825.asp <http://www.cde.ca.gov/fg/aa/ca/ab825.asp>

Hi everyone,

I must be out of the loop..it sounds like you are talking about ongoing funds. Could someone please elaborate on the funding info?

Thanks,

I do grieve for you Linda! But why then, do they call them "library ed." funds if they're used for textbooks . . . ? I would definitely get a commitment ON PAPER (or via email) from your principal that since ALL funding was used by textbooks this year, you will anticipate a double portion of funding next year to replace what your students were shorted on this year. (You may want to work it more tactfully . . . !) If that doesn't work, perhaps those of us who got shorted should notify our state reps and let them know that the loss of the budget line item for libraries HAS DEFINITELY IMPERILED LIBRARY FUNDING. And do make a note on your school library plan that "Funding for our goals/plans was not implemented this year (2007-08) due to. . . " - that needs to be made known.

On the other hand, I want to go on the record and say that my principal did set aside money for our library this year :-) ! If we get it all, it will be almost $10 per student (which equals about ? a new book per student), although a good chunk of it is going to a new set of encyclopedias. After our reference purchase, we'll gain about 1/3 of a new book per student. However, much of the order is already going for replacement books - popular titles that were lost but not replaced due to lack of funding last year, so we're still not getting a lot of truly new materials. I'm pleased that we got all the titles for the CYRM program this year, and I have a very high level of participation, which has grown each year. We've also added some new magazine titles and dropped others that weren't circulating.

I know you will all grieve with me when I tell you that my district has just informed me that the ENTIRE one-time library ed. funds are going to textbooks - how sad indeed.
