[CALIBK12] the continuing weeding saga

Another collective thanks for all your help with the cataloguing question.
I'll work on compiling your responses and get them out as a collective
reference for future beginners.

Seriously folks, I am almost done with the weeding portion of this job (and
then it's on to discarding what's been weeded, processing the new books we
have and getting them on the shelves, updating the catalogue, and maybe even
doing an inventory, if possible). Just so you know, I have until Christmas
to accomplish as much as possible. I'm in there to help get the collection
into shape, and then it's back to the classroom for me (but hopefully not
forever!).

In any case, I am into the 800s. The 700s nearly killed me. It's hard to get
rid of gorgeous art books that are just old and beginning to fall apart. But
we need more room on our shelves, so good-bye to a lot of them. The 800s,
however, are harder. This is the section that is over 40 years old, on
average. How do you know what to get rid of? From what I can tell, most of
it hasn't been used in a long time. I am not a literature expert, so I don't
always notice all the important authors to keep. Should I continue to go
only on age and condition? And what happens when it seems like everything is
30 years old, was last checked out in 1997, and in okay but not great
condition?

Thanks again for your collective wisdom. It's really kept me going these
last few days (that, and the awesomest student assistants anyone could ask
for!).
