Dear Calib Friends,
I am seeking some tried-and-true information literacy and library
lessons that I can share with teachers and hopefully adapt with them to
fit their curriculum and then teach together. I am currently half-done
with my MLIS/LMT program and have a number of full-fledged
collaborations I have developed, but in the interests of time (and so as
not to scare off my collaborators), I believe I need to start with
single, high-utility lessons to complete in 1 (or maybe 2 class
sessions). At the moment, I am primarily interested in lessons for
grades 6-8, but would appreciate any level. Because these students are
novices, even lessons for lower grades could be made quite appropriate.
My district has had no history of true library/classroom collaboration
and has had very little library skills or information literacy
instruction going on at all. We have only library paraprofessionals at
our K-6 and 7-8 schools. My position is a district position as I am the
guide and liaison for the sites (in addition to the many other
literacy-related and textbook tasks which come my way). Having been
successful in getting our sites back to full-time staffing (up from
half-time), I am now trying to mount my case for credentialed staffing
as well, so I need to show what can be accomplished.
My boss (the Director of Curriculum and Instruction) acknowledges the
instructional role and wishes for me to begin instruction at the sites
grade level by grade level. Although I am only one person, I see this
as a challenge to work with teachers and connect their content standards
to the potential of the library. So that I can begin with a manageable
chunk, I will begin working with the Language Arts Departments at our
two junior highs. I know they feel pressured by the pacing calendar for
the Holt text, but if I start out small, I think I can convince them.
Thank you in advance for any lessons or helpful advice you wish to
contribute,
Anne
