The Clearinghouse for Specialized Media and Technology (CSMT) provides
state adopted textbooks for K-8.

If you need textbooks for grades 9-12, here are some sources:

In general:

Probably the best source for finding materials is "Louis: Database of
accessible materials for people who are blind or visually impaired" at
http://www.aph.org/louis.htm. You can search the database by keyword,
author, title, or subject, and specify format. The database does not
list prices, however, so you have to contact each organization
separately.

In audio:

Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFB&D)

20 Roszel Road

Princeton, NJ 08540

(800) 221-4792

www.rfbd.org <http://www.rfbd.org/>

There are two types of memberships available

1. Individual membership: one-time registration fee of $65.00, plus
$35.00 a year.

2. Institutional membership: price ranges from $300 a year for 25 audio
books to $800 a year for 100 audio books.

RFB&D uses specially recorded CDs
(http://www.rfbd.org/DigitalTransitionFAQs.htm). These CDs require a
special CD player or special software for your computer (which you can
purchase from RFB&D).

Anyone with a documented print-related disability is eligible to become
a member of RFB&D, including anyone with a visual impairment, learning
disability, or other physical disability that limits the effective use
of standard print. Check out RFB&D's website for more information.

In large print:

Library Reproduction Service (LRS)

14212 S. Figueroa St.

Los Angeles, CA 90061

(800) 255-5002

www.lrs-largeprint.com <http://www.lrs-largeprint.com/>

One of the major sources for our large print books is Library
Reproduction Service (LRS). LRS has over 24,000 titles available in
large print, with a minimum type size of 20 point for grades 1-7, and 18
point for grades 8-12 and adult. Most are textbooks, but there are over
2000 juvenile and adult literature titles available as well. Some are
even in color! LRS will also make a large print reproduction of any
title not in their catalog if you send them a copy of the regular print
edition. While the made-to-order reproductions from LRS tend to be
expensive, LRS does offer their Cornerstone series of books for
bookstore prices -- $19.95 to $35.95. As of March 2007 the Cornerstone
series has 74 children's titles and 67 classic titles, with plans to add
approximately new titles every year. LRS produces large print books for
Clearinghouse for Specialized Media and Technology (CSMT), part of the
California Department of Education, which provides large print and
braille textbooks for grades K-8 to California public schools.

InfoCon

This company also produces large print books for CSMT.

American Printing House for the Blind (APH)

1839 Frankfort Ave.

P.O. Box 6085

Louisville, KY 40206-0085

(800) 223-1839

www.aph.org <http://www.aph.org/>

You can search the "Louis: Database of accessible materials for people
who are blind or visually impaired" at http://www.aph.org/louis.htm and
specify "large print" as format and "American Printing House for the
Blind" as agency. Most of APH's books are textbooks, however. Because
the books are short run editions, they tend to be expensive ($40.00 or
more). Make sure you check the font size. Some of the books are only
enlarged to a 14 point font, which isn't much larger than regular print.

Please excuse the cross posting.

I have two blind students on campus this year. We are having a very
hard time finding audio copies of the textbooks for them. Does anyone
know of a source for the textbooks in either VERY large print or audio
format. The publisher's rep has been slow to answer our email.
