"Does anyone know if LAUSD accepts these and how many points you can get for
them?"
-Lisa Blackwell
Dear Lisa,
GSLISCE at Simmons College has provided workshops for many school
librarians in California. I can't answer your specific question about
LAUSD, but here's our general information:
In Massachusetts, CEUs (continuing education units) are calculated as
0.1 CEU for each contact hour. A contact hour is the term used to
describe the time "in the classroom". Most of our ONLINE workshops are
calculated at 15 contact hours which means that it awards 1.5 CEUs.
Every person who completes an online workshop is automatically mailed a
customized Certificate of CEUs shortly after the workshop in finished.
In Massachusetts, PDPs (professional development points) are used
primarily for recertification of a school librarian license. Each
contact hour equals 1.0 PDPs, so the same online workshop would award
15.0 PDPs (which is the minimum number required by Massachusetts DOE).
PDPs are awarded via a letter sent out at the end of the semester.
If you want CEUs, you don't need to do anything other than complete the
workshop - and you will be mailed your certificate.
If you want PDPs, you will need to fill in the information requested on
the registration form (your social security number and area of
concentration). Your PDP award letter will be mailed to you at the end
of the semester.
Please let us know if your school district uses a different terminology
or calculation and we'll be happy to customize a certificate for you.
Sincerely,
Jody Walker
