Everyone seems to concur that the book is "Surviving the Applewhites" by Stephanie Tolan.

I am looking for the title of a book for a student, and I'm sure some of you helpful people out there will have an answer for me lickety-split. 

The student remembers the book being about a "rebel" or "bad guy" and his family whose last name is or starts with "Apple." It was recommended by her junior high school librarian, who also recommended Sharon Creech's "Walk Two Moons" at the same time. (I managed to figure that one out.)
