[CALIBK12] textbook questions

You mention several good reasons not to get involved. Point out the cost of hiring somebody, and paying benefits. Figure out the cost of the "real estate" that would be devoted to the textbooks. Figure out costs of shelving. Perhaps each teacher could take care of his own textbooks, like we older teachers used to do. Much cheaper. Much more efficient. Pay the teachers a day's pay to check them out and in, as a bribe. Hold departments responsible for losses. I hope you wiggle out of this one, because it could eat you alive for several days a year.

Subject: [CALIBK12] textbook questions

Hey all,
I'm a new HS LMT at a HS that just relocated to a new site, so I have a totally new facility and everything.

OK, the school did not build in a textbook room, nor did the former librarian manage textbooks, in fact, no one really did.

They have come to me hoping I could give them some guidelines on setting up a barcoding/tracking system.

I have Athena but we will be going to Destiny next year. They actually want to pull this barcoding off THIS October, by retreiving all of the text books that have already been distributed to students....

I can't really imagine this being pulled off....but if it could be here's my thoughts:

Here's what I DO know what to tell them:
-create a textbook room (there are some extra classrooms)
-buy the shelving and equipment, including their own barcode scanner, rather than "borrowing" my one in the library
-hire a clerk

Here's what I'm unsure of:
Will creating a seperate collection in Athena for the textbooks mess up my collection?
How long will it take to do?
We have a population of 1200 students and I'm not sure how many textbooks, probably upwards of 5 times that or more (could be many more)

I know there's stuff I'm not thinking of to consider, please give me your input.

They seem to think all you have to do is barcode and "enter them into a system" not realizing the rest of the equation.

Advice, anything, any part of this message will help.
thanks,
Ahbra Peach
