[CALIBK12] Readers Guide to Periodical Literature

Honestly, though, does the school have the microfilm/fiche to support a
Reader's Guide that goes back that far? If not, then what's the point? I
think that's when it becomes the public library's job.

On that note, when teaching my students how to use a subscription database,
I *love* telling my kids about researching using the RG, then hoping the
library you were at had the magazine or microfiche, and finally scanning
through it, which always made me dizzy. Their eyes grow huge! Too bad the
subscriptions haven't collected articles going back further.

Probably kept because the online indexing does not go back that far, or
perhaps online subscriptions were dropped at one time. Keep them around for
a year or two before tossing to see if they are still used.

I went to college (first time around) in fall 1973. Now, when I go online
to find my transcripts, I can only access the semesters beginning in Spring
'74. They did not invest the time and money to have prior semesters added to
the database. I had to request a paper copy of my transcripts (for just one
semester!) since my current college could not access my first semester
online. Everything else was there.

These kinds of "snafus" will turn up occasionally as the technology gaps
are straddled.

Having recently transferred to a high school library, I have found past
copies of the Readers Guide taking up space, and I'm wondering if anyone is
using this in high school libraries anymore? M. Jaquith, Kennedy High
