I will be volunteering at Conjecture Science Fiction
Convention, to be held at the Crowne Plaza, Mission
Valley, San Diego, Friday afternoon September 28
through Sunday September 30.
If anyone would like to join me in attending the
convention, you don't have to miss school to attend
(if you are local), as the convention doesn't really
get started until about 4pm Friday. And the
discounted rate for faculty and staff is only $20 for
the entire weekend (regular rate is $45). Young adult
author Sherwood Smith will be present, as will our
guest of honor, author Larry Niven.
The convention's theme this year is alien cultures in
science fiction and fantasy.
San Diego's Mars society will be giving several
presentations that may appeal to Earth Science
teachers.
Witness the Iron Hack storytelling competition in
fiction stadium.
Enjoy the art show, masquerade (costume contest),
anime room, gaming room, author book signings,
parties, music and more.
Panel topics that may particularly appeal to educators
and library/media professionals are:
-Your Voice Online: Podcasting Seminar
-Peer-Produced Media
-Classrooms of the Future
-Using SF to Push Scientific Literacy
-Google Wiki High
-The Future of Fanac: Wikis, Podcasting, Blogs, and
Beyond
-Archival Standards of Data Storage
-Academic Study of Popular Culture
-Liminal States in Characterization
-Intertextuality in Genre Fiction
-Reading Like a Writer
-Alien Libraries

I hope to see some of you there! It is going to be a
lot of fun!
