Getting Ready for RDA: Resource Description and Access
http://tinyurl.com/2pbryt
One-hour web conference with Christine Oliver - $109.95
RDA will be the new content standard for metadata when it is released
and implemented in 2009. With its focus on users and their information
needs, RDA aims to facilitate resource discovery. It emerged from a
major restructuring of current cataloging rules, although it is not a
revision of these rules. The very process of restructuring is creating
a new tool. RDA supersedes AACR2: it builds on the strengths of AACR2,
but takes a radically new approach to resource description.
Wednesday, April 9, 4:00 pm ET, 1:00 pm PT
The 21st Century School Librarian
http://tinyurl.com/2qw5ak
One-hour web conference with Robin T. Williams - $109.95
“If you build it, they will come” is no longer the case with digital
school libraries. Rather than live in fear of what students might do
on the Internet, let’s help them take control and teach them to manage
it and themselves within it. In this session, participants will learn
how to help students create dynamic information spaces using a wide
variety of free tools. Instead of hoping that students will visit our
Web pages, we are going to insert our information into their worlds.
Thursday, April 10, 3:00 pm ET, 12:00 pm PT
Search Engines 101: How Search Engines Work
http://tinyurl.com/24g3nf
One-hour audio conference with Rita Vine - $85.00
If you use the Web, you've certainly used Google and maybe other
search engines too. But do you really know what a search engine is?
For serious searchers, it's important to understand what's "under the
hood" of search engines. How do they create their databases? What is
included? Omitted? Why do search engines rank order results so
differently? How does ranking work? And what about all those ADS that
appear – can they affect search results? In this web conference, Rita
Vine will cover all the basics of search engines.
Friday, April 11, 12:00 pm ET, 9:00 am PT
LibQual+™ & Library Assessment: What Is All the Hype?
http://tinyurl.com/yuqtw9
One-hour audio conference with Louise McGillis - $85.00
LibQUAL+™ is a suite of services that libraries use to solicit, track,
understand, and act upon users' opinions of service quality.
Originally conceived by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL),
more than 500 libraries have participated in LibQUL+™, including
colleges and universities, community colleges, health sciences
libraries, law libraries, and public libraries -- some through various
consortia, others as independent participants. This session will look
at the LibQUAL+™ Survey — what it is, how it is run, and what the
results mean. In addition, LibQUAL+™ will be looked at in the broader
context of general library assessment.
Monday, April 14, 2:00 pm ET, 11:00 am PT
Library 2.0 Without All the MySpace Hype: How to Use Social Tools to
Solve Problems
http://tinyurl.com/2bnanq
One-hour web conference with Jessamyn West - $109.95
Social tools can be problem-solvers for libraries with tight budgets
and small staff. This session will review the idea of social software
in libraries and discuss the Library 2.0 delivery model in simple
language using lots of examples of 2.0 problem solving using library
case studies. While the focus will be on patron interaction, tools for
inter-library communication and solutions will be discussed as well.
Tuesday, April 15, 1:00 pm ET, 10:00 am PT
Using Technology Competencies to Build a Staff Tech Training Program
http://tinyurl.com/27jfaa
One-hour audio conference with Sarah Houghton-Jan - $85.00
Every library on the planet struggles with technology training for
staff. In this session, learn how to create a set of useful technology
competencies catered to your individual library and its technologies.
Also learn how to use these competencies - and staff assessments - to
build a self-sustaining staff technology training program. You will
hear about the purpose and benefits of competencies and technology
training, get a review of the process for creating competencies lists,
and learn about the implementation and assessment methodologies.
