April 17th is Poem in Your Pocket Day, and April is National Poetry Month.

At Riverview we will have a Poet Tree on the quad. It will be strung with
short poems printed on gold paper.  Students and teachers will be encouraged
to pick a poem, keep it in their pocket, and read it to people all day.  If
you want more ideas about this or other activities for poem in your pocket
day, I can send you an email with my plans, or you can click for great ideas
on the two sites above.

 

This email's just to send you some display sheets I've made with quotes I
found online from children that I think will help open students' minds to
the power of poetry.  These are the quotes, and they are printed large on
separate sheets - part of an upcoming library display and some posters:

 

 

*	I like poetry because it doesn't have to make sense the way a story
does, and because I can use similes and metaphors instead of plain old
writing.

 

*	I like poetry because it puts me in places I like to be.

 

*	I like poetry because it's a way for me to reveal my feelings.

It's easier than telling the person directly how you are feeling.

It helps to clear your mind about what you wrote about.

 

*	I like poetry because no one can say that you're wrong.

 

*	I like poetry because it sounds like music made out of words.
