[CALIBK12] Summer Reading suggestion

Hi Gang,

I'm looking to help my 7th grade teacher pick their summer read book.
They are looking for something that is high interest, but has enough
"meat" to have good discussions when students come back in the fall.

Also, it needs to be something kids can read independently. Last year
we chose House of the Scorpions by Farmer and there were several parents
who were really upset with the choice saying that it was too mature for
ther students. (by the way, most students loved this book so we are
moving that title to a required read during the year so the teachers can
help students process the deeper issues it brings up).

The reading level of my students is generally high, so we aren't looking
for an "easy read" just a read that includes issues that could be
handled by a fairly sheltered population of 7th graders.

Thanks for your help and suggestions--I'll compile a list.
