Received a flyer: "Come Meet Jeff Stone" author of The Five Ancestors series
(Tiger, Eagle, Crane, etc. - Random House Pub.). His first book of the
series (Tiger) received a starred review in Publishers Weekly. He will be at
the Barnes & Noble in Huntington Beach (7881 Edinger Ave.) Wednesday, May 7,
at 6:30 p.m. (more info: 714-897-8781). The B & N is located at the east
side of the mall, near the Cheesecake Factory. Note: The parking area
directly in front of the B & N is limited to 90 minutes and they DO ticket
in that area. The signs are posted but not very obvious (Huntington Beach
LOVES giving out tickets!). There's usually plenty of free parking in the
parking garages or near the other restaurants along Edinger.

Earlier there was a discussion on the list about author visits. One
recommendation I shared with the original requester was to contact the book
stores in her area and see if she could get information on local authors who
might be willing to come and speak for free, or for a minimal fee, since
they would have no overnight expenses, or possibly engage an author that
they were bringing in. Since the author would be speaking at the store they
might consider speaking at the school earlier in the day or the next day.
That might the best opportunity to pull in a "real" author at minimal
expense; however you would need to make arrangements in advance - possibly
several months in advance. Since authors often attend our conference or
others such as the Reading Council's you might look over the list of authors
as soon as the info is released and find out if they will give you a reduced
speaking fee since they'll be in the area anyway.
