[CALIBK12] updated list of cuts to libraries in California

One important thing we do in Long Beach is to concentrate on how the
lack of library teachers affects students. If we just tried to save our
jobs we would be gone in a flash. Blanche is right. There are several
components of the arguments.

It would be helpful to know (as Barbara Duffy asked) what districts
aren't
being threatened. Then those librarians could be asked, "Why not?"
What
have they been doing all along to stave off the executioner's axe.

This is not a new problem. Dr. Loertscher has been and continues to be
trying to get solutions to everyone. The process of saving a job does
not
begin when the notice goes out that the job is threatened. Saving a
job
begins with day one on the job.

Now is time to talk about what children will lose when the person who
helps them keep reading after grade five when homework, sports events,
music lessons start to take more and more time. Now is the time to
talk
about what teachers will lose when the person who helps them teach
their
children those research skills they need, not just in their school
years,
but for the rest of their lives.

Now is the time to talk about the fact that research shows having a
good
school library and a professional in charge has an impact, a favorable
impact, on student learning and achievement scores.

Now is the time to get parents to understand what happens when library
services are cut. The Accelerated Reader does not make good readers
nor
does a fancy "circulation" system for textbooks does not mean
textbooks
are automatically under control. So, we need to keep those technical
helpers to do the technical work.

Cutting back on library aides in elementary means those students who
need
more things to read will have access to less. Are parents really aware?
Is
the community really aware? Are we just sitting waiting for the
reprieve
rather than working to earn that reprieve? What if the reprieve
doesn't
come?

Nothing may work! Nothing may happen differently, but it is critical
that
the something is done because doing nothing is sure to fail.
