WASC -- Advocacy Opportunity for the Library Media Teacher
By Susan Maass, Curriculum Committee

The WASC accreditation process is a powerful stimulus for schools to re-examine or define their goals and objectives. It is an opportunity to look introspectively at the instructional program of the school and to write descriptions that emphasize both accomplishments and the need for change.

It is equally an opportunity for the Library Media Teacher to:

• Assume a position on the WASC leadership team,

• Promote the library program by writing sections for ALL focus groups, and

• Define your goals for an exemplary library media program.

Joining the leadership team could mean becoming the Self-Study Coordinator, leading a focus group, or providing support for evidence displays.

When selecting a focus group, most school administrators will want to place the LMT on group E: School Culture and Support for Student Personal and Academic Growth. It is important to write for this group but even more important for the school staff to see you as a teacher and curricular leader; if at all possible choose group B: Standards-based Student Learning: Curriculum.

An exemplary program is what we all seek. Check out the following important publications:

Subject: [CALIBK12] WASC session at CSLA conference

Hello All,

Can anyone out there share the handouts/info (or
anything you have!) from the "WASC--Advocacy Opportunity for the Teacher
Librarian" session at CSLA? There were so many great sessions to choose from I
missed a few I really would have liked to go to.

I am currently working with a high
 school to
upgrade their library and would like to know how/where we will fit into the
whole WASC process, which they are doing this year.

Thanks for any help you can offer.
