Hello everyone,
I am also interested in how any of you have handled a library move due to construction. I am in a similar situation. Our high school library will be demolished and replaced with a brand new building twice the size of the current library. I am very excited about this project especially considering the current state of the economy in education. I know it will be a challenging year but I am encouraged by how awesome it will be when we get our new library! We will be moving into the equivalent of 2 ¾ classrooms (portables). The move needs to be completed by the beginning of May.
This is what we have already done to protect the relationship between library and classrooms, collaboration, and student access to technology:
1. Invited all departments (one at a time) to have their monthly department meetings in the library. At this meeting I asked the teachers to select the print materials that we should have in the temporary library and to help me discard obsolete materials. In Destiny, I created categories to enter these selected materials. I will also allow some of the library books to be housed in classrooms. These books will be checked out to the teachers. Discussed how we could still collaborate in delivering the lessons we have developed together and established that next year I'll go the classroom to teach some of these lessons and part of the freshmen orientation. The teachers all know exactly what is happening and they are a part of this move.
2. Lobbied with teachers and administrators for a computer lab in the library as we have one now. It was decided that we must have a full networked computer lab in the library for students and staff to access the library electronic resources. For this I gave up the space for a library office/workroom and I will be working side-by-side with my assistant at the circulation desk. I might regret this but at this point I feel it is more important to have the lab for the students and staff.
3. We do textbooks... I have worked with the department chairs and made arrangements for collection, storage, and distribution of textbooks at each department.
4. Measured the new space and made a scaled diagram on paper with "cut out" furniture, shelving, computer stations, copy machines, etc. A simple tool that helped with huge accomplishments. I have been sharing this diagram with custodians, site and district administrators, teachers and students. And I have asked them for their input on the best arrangement for this temporary library. This diagram gives clear details of the space needed/available for tables, shelving, computer desks, etc. It helped me determine that I can move less than 1/3 of the current library.
I feel really good about what has already happened since everyone in our school is excited about this move and they are willing to "help out." I know what is ahead of me but in a strange way, I am looking forward to it with out any fear of losing the ground work I have already established here.

Subject: [CALIBK12] HS Circulation desks
Hello everyone!
I was just informed that I will be getting a new addition to my library beginning in August 09. I have a couple of questions for this group:
1. Does anyone know of a good companies to use to order a new circulation desk? I will need a circular configuration since it will be placed in the middle of the old and the new room.
2. I have also been informed that I will be removed from my library for 2 whole years for the construction to take place. Needless to say I am a bit worried about working with teachers from a double wide trailer that can only house a small amount of my collection.
Can anyone share how they may have handled a similar situation? I am concerned about losing all of the ground work I have set getting teachers to collaborate with me up to this point. I am told I will be placed in a small double wide trailer. I want to ensure teachers don't forget what a great resource the library continues to be even when I am displaced? Any suggestions?
Any insight you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
