1. Spend time with staff to pinpoint what they are doing in the classroom so you can identify areas where you can provide support. Offer to get involved with teaching the research process.

2. Until you can drum up some financing, try making a webpage to which you can add hotlinks to useful websites (focus on high quality sites that support the work they are doing, then add reference tools, and some stuff just for fun)

3. When I started up an elementary school library, we had no home and no books for the first semester, so I visited the county office of education library and the public library and brought in books to stock classroom libraries. It was a lot of work, but it kept me in contact with both kids and teachers.

4. We have an alternative HS on our site. In addition to having full access to the library, I have assisted them in bringing in authors for special visits.

5. Get yourself set up with Follett’s Titlewave or a similar vendor of books, and start collecting catalogs for equipment (such as Troxell). Then let it be known that you can be their go-to person when they need info for purchases.

6. Become an expert at PowerPoint, Word, Publisher, etc. and then offer to teach these things.

Subject: [CALIBK12] library services for continuation high schools

Dear Fellow LMTs,
I'm the first LMT (half time) ever at a small school which includes, among other programs, a continuation high school. My mandate is to provide library services for the students and staff. I'm having difficulty nailing down approaches that are useful. There's no collection, and no money to buy anything. We do have a small computer lab.
There must be others of you out there who are working with these special students. I'm interested in hearing what you do to engage them and meet their information needs.
Thanks,
Debra Gable
