We do magazine with barcodes on index cards. We scan the card and write the
date of the magazine on the card. When the magazine comes in, we book drop
the card. You could do something similar for ear buds. Keep a tiny box
with index cards with barcodes, then write on the card what the item was
that you are tracking. You could assign the card the name GENERIC if you
wish.
