G'day!
This is my second year at a middle school site and I am reading as many
of our books as I possibly can to provide the best service to my
clients. Here is my dilemma: I am uncomfortable with the F word in a
middle school setting, however, beyond that, several of the books I have
read have great merit. Specifically one that comes to mind is the
wonderful, wonderful book "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time
Indian" by Sherman Alexie. The sentence that strikes a chord with me but
is essential to the story line is "Did you know that Indians are living
proof that niggers f-k buffalo". Yikes!
I am fairly liberal and realize that our kids use the word on a regular
basis but still I am having a problem with it. So my question is this...
how do you approach these situations?
