Barbara Jeffus mentioned so many great ideas to give your legislators! I
like to use items that are unique to the Central Valley when I visit
legislators in Sacramento plus a copy of "School Libraries Work"!

Just keep it inexpensive. They have to declare/claim all gifts over a
certain amount. I've seen two figures, from a proposed $10 to $390 per
year from a single source. You might even want to note the value on the
card. You could do it like the credit card ad--value of x, value of y,
value of z, value of having you in the legislature, priceless.
How about a pack of thank you notes featuring readers or students or
libraries? Some wrapped peppermints in a jar or another item produced in
her home district? How about something (handwritten notes?) from the
students in your schools? A business card holder built like books? A
"Kids Need Libraries" button? A copy of ALA's "Quotable Facts About
America's Libraries?"

cfm A paperback copy of the Amelia Earhart book? There's a mug around
that says "Well-behaved women seldom make history."

If you deliver the basket in person, take a photo, put it in one of
those card frames you can buy in a stationary store, and then send it to
her for her office.
This became a fun lunch time exercise:-) I think I'll keep the list for
when we get ready for legislative day events. Let's see if Sandra Yoon,
the master basket assembler, has other suggestions! Barbara

Hi everyone,
One of our local school board members was recently elected to the
state assembly. The teacher librarians in our district would like to
put together a basket of "goodies" for her Sacramento office that
would remind her of us as she goes about her daily business. I have
come up with the typical office stuff (Librarian's pens, pencils,
etc.), tea bags, a copy of School Libraries Work 2008, and the
current Good Ideas. Does anyone have any suggestions for what we
could include in this basket?
Thanks,
Katie
