[CALIBK12] Query: Generic Bar Code in Destiny?

Since earbuds are worn inside the ear and not over them, there is a hygiene issue with sharing them.

I have taken the earbuds out of the playaway box and give students the option of using their own headphones or buying a set for $1.00. They keep the earbuds.

You could barcode 6-7 envelopes and place them under a record titled "earbud" . When a student borrows an earbud set, you can scan the barcoded envelope, and place the earbuds into the envelope for checkout. I wouldn't worry too much about earbuds either, but doing something like this might bring more back than just by handing them out.

Doug,

In my opinion (or imho) ear buds are not worth tracking. I bought them in bulk from Follett two years ago and haven't even used up half of them. They break easily and I'm not inclined to penalize a student who gets it caught on a chair or whose kid sister tears them apart. If I've got a kid who will read a book while listening to it instead of not reading at all, I'm doing my job.

Dear Colleagues,

We have a selection of Playaways in our collection. Most students have their own ear buds but occasionally we have a student who needs a pair. I’d like to have a “generic” bar code that we would keep next to the circ desk station. We’d simply scan that barcode whenever we check out a pair of ear buds.
So, this would mean having a single bar code represent many individual “copies” of an item. I don’t want to have to individually assign a bar code to each pair of ear buds.
I haven’t figured out how to do this in Destiny. Or maybe this isn’t the best way to accomplish this?
Any and all advice would be appreciated.
