Although it is longer than the required length, I just finished reading "The knife of never letting go" by Patrick Ness. I was on the edge of my seat it was so suspensful, I wept copiously at parts, and have been thinking about it daily since I finished it. I read it in one sitting because I simply could not put it down. I handed it straight to my principal, without cataloging it, because I know he will enjoy it as much as I. It is without a doubt the best book I read this year! Thank you to Michael Cart @the CSLA conference for introducing this book. The only problem is, it's the first in the "Chaos Walking" series and now I am waiting for the sequel.
Synopsis: Humans have landed on a distant planet seeking religious freedom. They engage in a devastating war with the local inhabitants, who fight back with a biological weapon, which killed all the women, caused men's thoughts to be heard openly, and allowed people to communicate with animals as well. This chaos is known as "The Noise". Todd, the last child born, is approaching his 13th birthday when he will assume the mantle of manhood. Sent off by his guardians to gather fruit in the swamp with his faithful, if stupid, dog Manchee, Todd is completely surprised by something he has never experienced in his life, a pocket of absolute silence. Turns out the advance ship for a new batch of colonists has crash landed, leaving one survivor, a girl, Viola. In order to protect Viola from the mob of men, Todd, Manchee, and Viola must flee into the unknown. That's just the beginning of this amazing book.

This title would have to appeal to both boys and girls, have about 250 pages, 7/8 grade reading level and have a recent copyright. I know that is a lot to ask, but maybe you have some good suggestions.
