[CALIBK12] bibliography lesson

One thing I do to help prepare for this is whenever I read a story to ANY grade I read the entire title page. I read the title and then say written by.... illustrations by.... published by.... out of ..... turn the page over and read the copyright date. So by the time by students are in the 4th grade they at least no where to find that information.
In the 4th grade, I do a simple power point lesson where I show them the information and how it should be written out and then there is an example for them to try and do. We then correct it together with the correct version on the power point screen for all to see. We do this for each material type. By the end of the lesson they have done one example of each and corrected it. The next lesson we try to do multiple examples and again correct as we go. The following lesson they bring in their own and make their bibliography right in the library. Once you create your power point this lesson can easily be repeated year after year.

Subject: Re: [CALIBK12] bibliography lesson
Maybe the following goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway.
I think one of the most important parts of teaching bibliography is to make sure students know where to find the information required. Title, author (surname first, comma, first name and initial), the use of et al. for multiple authors (although I usually have younger kids cite only the first author), publisher, year of publication (look for the copyright symbol), city (and which one to choose if given an exhaustive list). I emphasize that they need to find this information as officially cited on the title page and verso or copyright page.
Finding correct information is half the battle, and it takes some practice.
I agree that it's a good idea to have kids learn to format their own bibliographies before using a generator. I think it helps them understand the importance of formatting and being consistent. Then they truly appreciate the beauty of a generator. A generated bibliography will only be as good as the information they plug into it.
