Catherine Lewis says she is "a practitioner of Stephen Krashen's SSR idea."
I would love to take credit for SSR, but the idea is not mine. SSR (one of many terms to describe in-school self-selected reading with little or no accountability) has been around for quite awhile. The real pioneers included Jeannette Veatch, Daniel Fader, Frances Cyrog, Sam Duker, and many others.
The earliest study I have read of the effects of self-selected reading in school was published in 1937. Just for the record, it is:
Boney, C. and Agnew, K. 1937. Periods of awakening or reading readiness Elementary English Review 14: 183-187.
