Dear friends,

I suspect that there is truth in what has been said. I respect Janet Melikian for her principled stand on this issue. Based on the information presented, it appears that:

1. Either a poor decision was made; or

2. There was no realization that a decsion was being made.

Neither reflects well on the organization. While it may well be reasonable to leave, I would like to make the argument to stay.

Now more than ever, teacher librarians in California need to stick together. While there may have been some mis-steps from within, the larger issue must be where the economy in our state is going and what that will do to school libraries. Now more than ever, we need to be ready to fight for our libraries and for our jobs. We know the difference that we make in the world. Now more than ever, we must band together to advocate for our students' futures. To my thinking, we have no other option.

This absolutely does not mean that people should not let their disappointments be known. Accountability is a requirement for solid decision-making. Let's make sure, though, that we realize who the real "enemy" is.

Best,

Tom Nixon
